They are organic semi-precious and precious stones formed by laminating the pearly layer of molluscs, mainly oysters and mussels. The name 'pearl' is thought to be derived from the Middle English term for 'pearl', which in turn came from the Latin word 'perna', meaning 'leg', which is thought to reflect the shell-shaped leg (ham-leg). Pearls can come from freshwater or marine molluscs. The beauty of pearls is that they can be brought out of their shell already naturally beautiful, fully formed and displaying a perfect lustre without the need to reduce or polish them.

Natural pearls are extremely rare, incredibly expensive and usually small. That is why people have developed ways of cultivating/cultivating pearls so that we can all enjoy these beautiful gemstones. In cultured pearls, some of the pearl tissue is embedded in the shell around the foreign body. If the process is successful, the shell makes a 'pearl sac' around the foreign body, the cells of which secrete a layer of brownish protein called Conchiolin. This is followed by the secretion of many mineral layers of Sedef, made up of calcium carbonate in thin overlapping layers.

Before man began to cultivate pearls, they were collected from the Persian Gulf, Sri Lanka, fresh water sources in China and some rivers in Europe. Later, Christopher Columbus discovered pearls in South America. When natural pearls were almost used up at the beginning of the 20th century, the Chinese and Japanese started to cultivate pearls. It takes a mussel 3 to 7 years to make one pearl. The colour of the pearl depends on the type of lamination.

Medicinal * Metaphysical properties

Some healers use the Pearls to help balance the body's rhythms and hormone levels with the lunar cycle and to harmonise man with nature.
