The most recent rediscovery was in 1974. It was discovered by Miguel M\u00e9ndez, a native of the Dominican Republic, and Norman Rilling, a United Nations Volunteer for Peace. Together they named the stone after M\u00e9ndez's daughter \"Larissa\" . They combined the first letters of her name \"Lari\" with the word \"Mar\", which means sea in Spanish. Larimar is also known as the \"Atlantis Stone\", because of the old legends that claim that the Dominican Republic was once part of the lost city of Atlantis. Larimar is a rare mineral belonging to the Pectolite group. Its characteristic blue colour is due to Calcite, which has replaced its copper impurities.
