Malachite

History

  • Malachite probably gets its name either from the Greek word "malhe" (meaning "grass") for its green colour, or from the Greek word "malakos" (meaning "soft") for the ease of working the stone itself. Malachite is like Green Marble, which is composed mainly of the compound Copper Carbonate. The copper content of the rock gives it its green colour. Malachite is light to very dark green in colour. The eye-like circles that appear on Malachite are the most common and this is why it is also known as 'peacock's eye'. If more water is present in the Bakr, the Malachite is lighter in colour. Otherwise, when there is less water, the Malachite becomes darker. A lack of water in the Bakr itself means that the Malachite will have black lines or spots. Polished Malachite has a silky lustre. Resin is usually added to improve the lustre and to protect the surface.

Care

  • Do not clean malachite with an ultrasonic cleaner as the protective surface of the resin may be damaged or removed. Malachite is sensitive to heat, acids, ammonia and hot water. Rinsing malachite with clean water is safe. Leave it to air dry on its own. It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a cloth-covered box or wrapped in cloth separately from other stones to prevent self-damage and possible scratches.
  • It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
