History
- Dumortierite is an aluminium borosilicate first described in 1881. It was named after the French palaeontologist Eugene Dumortier (1803-1873). As it is known to turn an extremely pure white colour when heated, it is often used for the production of porcelain and ceramics. Dumortierite is one of the more rare and unusual blue quartz types. It is a combination of quartz aggregate and Dumortierite. The blue colour of quartz is surprisingly quite rare. Dumortierite colours can range from red-brown to purple-blue and from dark to light blue. Dark blue is the most common colour. Many stones may also show whitish streaks or spots along with their blue colour. Dumortierite mineral impurities in quartz give it its blue colour.

Care
- Dumortierite does not require much when it comes to its care and maintenance. It is quite hard and very durable. To clean it, simply use soapy water and a soft cloth. Be sure to rinse the stone well to remove any soapy residue. As with most gemstones, ultrasonic cleaners and steamers are not recommended.
- It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a fabric-covered box or wrapped in cloth separately from the others to prevent damage and possible scratches. It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
