History

- Zoisite was originally named Saulapit because of the town of Saulape in Austrian Carinthia. The name Zoisite was introduced by A.G. Werner in 1805 in honor of Sigmund Zois (1747-1819), the Austrian scholar who financed the collecting expedition. From Baron Zois, Werner received a specimen from Saualpe, which was found in 1804 by the mineral merchant Simon Prešern. Ruby Zoisite is a natural combination of Ruby and Zoisite crystals. It is also known as Aniolite. This name comes from the Maasai word for "green" (anyoli). Other variations of the names are "Ruby in Zoisite" and "Tanganyika Art Stone". Zoisite ruby was first discovered by Tom Blevins in the mining town of Longido (Tanzania). Tanzania is the only source for beautiful specimens of Ruby Zoisite. Blevins initially thought he had found huge deposits of ruby in 1949, but it later turned out to be a green zoisite matrix with large inclusions of mostly opaque ruby. Ruby Zoisite can vary greatly in color, pattern and hardness. Zoisite provides an earthy green color, while Ruby inclusions provide pink and red highlights.

Care
- Zoisite can be easily cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. Be sure to rinse it well to remove any soapy residue. Avoid prolonged exposure to heat, as heating can permanently change the color of your stones. When storing jewelry made of stones or the stones themselves, it is best to put them in a box covered with fabric or wrap them in a cloth separately from the others to prevent damage and scratches. It is recommended to remove jewelry during major physical activities, such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewelry and stones.
