Turquoise

History

  • The name "Turquoise" is derived from the French word "turqueise" (meaning "Turkish stone"), since the Turks were the first to import it to Europe. Turquoise is usually blue-green in colour with brownish-black veins of matrix running through it. Turquoise is mined all over the world. Each location gives it a specific colour and characteristics, ranging from the bright sky blue (sleeping beauty from Arizona) to the rough, organic yellow-green from Africa.

Care

  • Turquoise is porous, which means it can be damaged by chemicals. When cleaning Turquoise, use only clean water and a soft cloth. It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a fabric-lined box or wrapped in a cloth separately from the others to prevent damage and possible scratches.
  • It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
