Calcite

History

  • Calcite is the most stable form of Calcium Carbonate and the primary ore of Calcium. Calcium Carbonates are a very rich group of minerals and in their purest form are completely colourless with excellent transparency. Calcite is the primary mineral found in Metamorphic Marble and is also a common constituent of sedimentary rocks such as Limestone, which often contain organic matter (including the remains of shells of marine organisms). Pearls and Corals have a very similar composition to Calcite. Calcite is rather soft and brittle compared to other types of rock. Calcite is often confused with Quartz and Gypsum. It is much softer than Quartz and significantly harder than Sadra. In its pure form it is completely colourless. The impurities of Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Magnesium and Cobalt give it its different colour. The most common colours of Calcite are white, grey, yellow, orange, green, red and blue.
