Mookaite

History

  • Mookaite is an Australian Jasper from Mooka Creek (Western Australia). It is a type of Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline type of Quartz. It combines the lighter colours of yellow and red Jasper. In the traditional Aboriginal language, the word 'mooka' means 'flowing water' and refers to the many springs that flow into the Mooka area. The Mooka contains the skeletal remains of radiolarians, microscopic protozoans with hard siliceous shells that have been deposited for thousands of years as sediment in shallow areas of the sea. When the water dried up, the remains were solidified by the addition of silica along with other minerals, creating the beautiful combinations of red, burgundy red, mustard yellow, cream, white, brown, mottled and purple colours of Mokaite.
  • Mookaite is described as Devil, Opalite or Chalcedon, or a combination of all three. There are also rare occurrences of black Dendritic inclusions in Mokaite, which show up as Dendritic Trees on grinding and increase its value considerably. There are many names and terms used for Mokait. Locals claim that the correct name for it is Mokait, or Mookaite in English.

Care

  • It is advisable to remove jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
