History
- The stone was named by the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus, who found it on the banks of the Achates River in present-day Sicily between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. It belongs to the Quartz (silica) family. It is classified as a cryptocrystalline variety or, more specifically, as Chalcedony. Agate is commonly found alongside many other stones and is primarily classified as a volcanic rock. It often grows in pockets in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks such as Granite. It normally grows in almond-shaped or spherical nodules and is deposited in layers over a long period of time, giving rise to visible parallel layer-threads. Specimens containing layered streaks are separated as Agate, while mixed and uniform ones are classified as Chalcedony, Carnelian, Mossy Agate and other commercial names.

Care
- As Agate is Quartz, we must be careful not to use anything harder than it when cleaning. The stone is simply cleaned with lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush. As is the case with most stones and jewellery, the use of household chemicals in cleaning is not recommended. Extreme heat can cause permanent damage to the Agate.
- It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a fabric-covered box or wrapped in cloth separately from the others to prevent damage and possible scratches.
