Silver cleaning

Why does silver oxidize?

The oxidation of silver itself is affected by several factors: elevated body temperature, hand and body creams, hairsprays, perfumes, soaps, humidity, acidity of the body, chlorine and other chemicals, etc.. Avoid wearing jewelry in hair salons or swimming pools, as the silver will literally blacked out. Jewelry should be dry and stored in separate rooms. We recommend that you remove your jewelery before major physical activities, exercise, swimming, showering, cleaning, applying make-up, using hair care products and perfumes.

Once oxidised, silver is easy to clean. When cleaning, be careful not to scrub too hard as silver is very soft. Even rhodium-plated silver can oxidise in some cases. You can read some methods on how to clean silver yourself below. 2. Silver cleaner

  • Silver cleaner can be in paste or liquid form. Soak the silver in the cleaner and leave it for five minutes or more, depending on the cleaner manufacturer. Then clean the silver lightly with a toothbrush and rinse it under warm water. Do not use this cleaning procedure for silver jewellery containing precious or semi-precious stones, pearls or shells, as they can cause discolouration or cracks.

3. Baking soda

  • Boil enough water to cover the silver. Place aluminium foil in a glass or plastic container and place the silver on top of the foil so that it is in direct contact with the foil. Sprinkle baking soda on the silver and pour boiling water over the silver to cover it. The reaction between the soda and the boiling water will produce bubbles. The silver is then cleaned under warm running water and wiped dry. Do not use this cleaning procedure for silver jewellery containing precious or semi-precious stones, pearls or shells as they may cause discolouration or cracks.

4. Ultrasonic cleaner

  • Ultrasonic jewelry cleaners use sound waves to remove dirt, soap residue and oil. Do not use this cleaning process on silver jewelry containing precious or semi-precious stones, pearls or shells as they may cause discoloration or cracks.

5. How to clean silver-plated jewellery without dangerous chemicals?

  • All silver-plated jewelry darkens at some point due to everyday use, as chemicals reacting with the air change the color of the jewelry. Silver-plated jewelry has a very thin layer of silver covering the non-precious base metal. As the coating is thin, care must be taken when cleaning and the jewelry must be cleaned several times in order to increase its shine.

6. Gentle cleaning:

  • Step 1: Mix 1 teaspoon of mild, perfume-free soap with lukewarm water in a bowl.
  • Step 2: soak a soft cloth in soapy water and then gently clean your jewelry that is immersed in the bowl. Do not scrub too hard to avoid scratching the jewelry. Rinse the jewelry well under running water and wipe with a clean cloth.

7. Deeper cleaning:

  • Step 1: place the aluminium foil on the bottom of the container
  • Step 2: add salt and baking soda and enough hot water to cover the jewelry. Stir the solution until the powder melts.
  • Step 3: Place the jewelry in the bowl and let it lie on the foil. The reaction of the Sulphur, which darkens the jewelry, with the foil will cause the black and yellow flakes to detach and begin to float on the water.
  • Step 4: Remove the jewelry after 10 minutes or wait until most of the impurities have disappeared.
  • Step 5: rinse the jewelry under lukewarm water and dry it with a soft cloth.

  • Repeat this method every two months or whenever the jewelry needs a deeper cleaning. Humidity itself encourages silver-plated jewelry to darken, so always keep your jewelry in a cool, dry place. A simple plastic bag works wonders. Jewelry should be kept dry and stored in separate rooms. While you can use polishing cloths and jewelry cleaners for silver jewelry this is not the case and is not recommended for silver plated jewelry. These can scratch the silver-plated part and cause more harm than good. The above method is safe, cheap and effective. Prolonged exposure to water and moisture can cause corrosion to silver plated jewelry. It is therefore recommended to remove jewelry before swimming, showering, cleaning, applying make-up, using hair care products and perfumes. Water and chemicals can cause jewelry to darken quickly.
