Aventurine

History

  • Aventurine is a type of Quartz. The shiny inclusions are usually composed of Mica, which usually show up in Aventurine as a medium to dark green colour with a silvery green or blue sheen. In addition to Mica, Hematite and Goethite are also present and cause a characteristic lustre (aventurisation/avanturisation). Aventurine ranges from light to dark green in colour. The strong presence of Fuchsite means that Aventurine is technically defined as a rock and not as a mineral. Although the most common colour of Aventurine is green, it can also be found in brown, orange, yellow, red or blue.
  • Quartz has been used for centuries to make gemstone jewellery and other decorative items. Some of the original tools discovered in Ethiopia (Omo Valley) were made of quartz. Many of the tools from Aventurine are more than two and a half million years old. Aventurine is a superior material for toolmaking because of its excellent hardness and its isotropic brittleness, which makes it relatively easy to shape.

Care

  • Aventurine can be cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. As with almost all semi-precious and precious stones, you should avoid using harsh household chemicals. Avoid prolonged exposure to heat as it can cause damage to the stone.
  • It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a fabric-covered box or wrapped in cloth separately from the others to prevent damage and possible scratches. It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
