History

- The name "Jade" comes from the Spanish word "piedra de ijada", which means "stone for pain in the side". The Chinese refer to Jade as "yu", which means "heavenly" or "imperial". Jade from the South Island of New Zealand gets its name from the word "pounamu" which means green stone. It was named so by the Maoris, who revered jade as a very precious stone. Maori made jade tools such as chisels, hooks, weapons, ornaments and jewelry. Jade from New Zealand is usually called Nephrite. Spinach Green Nephrite found on Lake Baikal in Russia is known as "Russian Jade". Jadeite is the rarer of the two types and consequently the more valuable. The most valuable type of Jade is the emerald green Jadeite, known as "Imperial Jade".

Care
- To clean Jade, simply use soapy water and a soft cloth. Be sure to rinse the stone thoroughly to remove any soapy water residue. As with most gemstones, ultrasonic cleaners and steamers are not recommended. Storing jewelry made of stones and the stones themselves is best put in a box covered with fabric or wrapped in a cloth separately from the others, thus preventing only damage and possible scratches.
- It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
