Chalcedony

History

  • The actual name of Chalcedon is said to be derived from the Latin word "Chalcedonius", which is said to be derived from the name of the ancient Asia Minor port of "Chalcedon", now Kadikoy, Turkey. It belongs to the quartz group of minerals and is distinguished by its translucency. It has a solid, lighter colour, usually ranging from bluish to white or grey. Chalcedony is a compact Silica mineral and is most commonly found in sedimentary and volcanic environments. The formation itself occurs over time as the minerals are slowly deposited in a pocket of another rock type such as Granite. Areas with major volcanic activity host the richest deposits of Chalcedony.

Care

  • The chalcedony can be easily cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. Be sure to rinse it well and remove any soapy residue. As with most gemstones, avoid using harsh household chemicals (bleach, acid, etc.). Chalcedony is quite porous, which means that it can be easily coloured as it absorbs chemicals and colours very easily. Avoid prolonged exposure to heat, as heating quartz can permanently change the colour of your gemstones.
  • When storing stone jewellery or the stones themselves, it is best to place them in a fabric-covered box or wrap them in cloth separately from other stones to prevent damage and scratches. It is advisable to remove the jewellery during major physical activities such as gymnastics or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
