Coral

History

  • Precious Coral is a variety of natural Coral quality stone closely related to reef rock Coral. It forms deep at the bottom of the rocky seabed where sedimentation is low. It grows in dark environments, over 500 metres deep, including in caves and crevices. Coral is slowly built up by coral polyps. These small sea creatures form hard shells in minutes, which accumulate as the colony grows. Eventually, the colony begins to form complex branches and skeletal structures made of hardened Calcium Carbonate and coloured with Carotenoids. These bio-formations grow very slowly, often only 1 millimetre per year, and vary from large to huge coral reefs.

Care

  • Coral is not very durable compared to most other stones and therefore requires a little more care and maintenance than other precious and semi-precious stones. Coral is very sensitive to acids and heat. It is also known that the colour can fade over time. To minimise colour loss, avoid exposing Coral to direct sunlight for long periods of time and avoid extreme temperature fluctuations. Do not clean Coral with any household cleaners (such as bleach or various acids) and do not spray perfumes or hairsprays directly on Coral. The Coral can be wiped with a soft cloth and cleaned with mild soap or detergent. Be sure to rinse the Coral well with cold water to remove any soapy residue.
  • It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a fabric-covered box or wrapped in cloth separately from the others to prevent damage and possible scratches. It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
