History
- Howlite is named after Henry Howe, who discovered it in Nova Scotia in 1868. It belongs to the Borate group of minerals, which occurs in Canada and parts of the USA. It forms as a cluster of irregular nodules that can appear in the shape of a cauliflower. Transparent crystals of Hovlite are very rare and small. Hovlite has the appearance of white Marble or Porcelain with a glassy lustre. It is opaque and white, grey, black or dark brown. Very rarely, it also occurs in a transparent crystalline form. Howlite is best known for counterfeiting other stones. Due to its porous nature, Hovlite can absorb dye well, which means it can be sold as Turquoise, Red Coral or as Lapis Lazuli.

Care
- Howlite is softer than other stones, so it is very easy to scratch. Avoid harsh household chemical cleaners. Simply use soapy water and a soft cloth to clean it. Be sure to rinse the stone well to remove any soapy residue. As with most gemstones, ultrasonic cleaners and steamers are not recommended.
- It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a fabric-covered box or wrapped in cloth separately from the others to prevent damage and possible scratches. It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
