Larimar

History

  • It was first discovered in 1916 by Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren. The most recent rediscovery was in 1974. It was discovered by Miguel Méndez, a native of the Dominican Republic, and Norman Rilling, a United Nations Volunteer for Peace. Together they named the stone after Méndez's daughter "Larissa" . They combined the first letters of her name "Lari" with the word "Mar", which means sea in Spanish. Larimar is also known as the "Atlantis Stone", because of the old legends that claim that the Dominican Republic was once part of the lost city of Atlantis. Larimar is a rare mineral belonging to the Pectolite group. Its characteristic blue colour is due to Calcite, which has replaced its copper impurities. The colour of Larimar can also be white to light blue or sky blue.

Clean Larimar with warm soapy water. Wipe the stone with a soft cloth and make sure it is well rinsed to remove any soapy residue. It is best to store the stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a cloth-covered box or wrap them in a cloth separately from the others to prevent self-damage and possible scratches.
  • It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
