Cat's Eye

History

  • Cat's Eye is also called the Red Eye of the Tiger or the Dragon's Eye. Its color is brownish red. It has a trigonal crystal system. The glow that can be seen on the Cat's Eye is produced during its formation. The red color is due to the degree of oxidation.
  • Falcon Eye is the blue-grey to blue-green version of Quartz. It belongs to the Quartz family of crystals. It is a type of macrocrystalline Quartz. Falcon Eye is initially a Crocidolite and later transforms into Quartz. Crocidolite is a fibrous blue mineral belonging to the Ribekite family (amphibole silicates). The transformation of Falcon Eye begins when Quartz slowly mixes in between the fibers of the Crocidolite, eventually replacing it completely and retaining its original shape. Falcon Eye is known for its cat-like optical effect, resembling the eye of a falcon. It is closely related to Tiger's Eye and Pietarsite, which have a similar effect. Tiger's Eye is actually formed from Falcon Eye. When the blue Crocidolite dissolves with Quartz, traces of Iron Oxide remain. Less Iron results in the blue color of the Krokidolite. More Iron results in the brown color of the Tiger's Eye. Pietarsite is an aggregate composed mainly of Falcon's Eye and Tiger's Eye. It has a rather chaotic swirling pattern which is formed during disintegration and later consolidates with the Quartz.
  • Tiger's Eye actually arises from the Falcon Eye. During the pseudomorphic transformation process, materials containing more Iron Oxide are manifested in the brown Tiger's Eye. When oxidation and Iron are less, the colour tends to the original blue colour of Krokidolite.
