Opal

History

  • The name "Opal" comes from the word "upala", meaning precious stone. There are three types of Opal: the noble opaque Opal, the Fire Opal and the opaque Opal group. Natural Opals are non-crystalline stones and contain 30% of water. The rainbow that appears on Opal, which depends on the angle of view, is reflected by light in the area where the cristobalite microspheres are. The colour that appears is called "fire" or "play of light". Precious Opals appear in a range of colours from white to black. Fire Opal is named after its colour and does not show opalescence. The colour of the Fire Opal ranges from yellow to red. It is usually milky, but the best specimens should be transparent. Plain Opal is usually opaque, rarely translucent and has no play of colour. It is often found mixed with other gemstones such as Agate Opal or Moss Opal.

Care

  • Opals are delicate stones. If left to dry, Opal can crack and fade. If you live in a very dry climate or keep them in a dehumidified room, some precautions are necessary. Store Opals in a tightly sealed plastic bag with a damp piece of cotton or cloth. This is the only way to prevent the Opals from dehydrating. The water content also makes Opals very sensitive to sudden changes in temperature. The solution is to clean your Opals with a soft cloth and mild soap if necessary. Do not use aggressive chemical or cleaning agents and avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steamers.
  • It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a fabric-covered box or wrapped in cloth separately from the others to prevent damage and possible scratches. It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
