History

- Mother of Pearl is the inner shell/coating of molluscs that produces pearls. Their shell is made up of three layers. The outermost is the Periostracum, followed by a layer of Calcite and then the deepest layers of the Pearl. This smooth part of the shell is produced during growth in the centre of the shell. Natural Pearl is found all over the world and is more common than Pearl. Clams always produce a shell, but very rarely contain a Pearl. A clam will produce a Pearl to protect its soft body from being irritated by a foreign body or parasite by enveloping it in a Pearl.

Care
- The pearl is quite soft compared to other pearls. The structure of Mother-of-Pearl and its lack of cleavage make it very hard and strong. It is recommended to clean the Pearl with a soft cloth after it has been worn. Avoid the use of ultrasonic cleaners and heat steamers. Simply use warm water and a mild soap or detergent. Wipe the pearl with a soft cloth, making sure to rinse it well and remove any soapy residue. Avoid using aggressive chemical or cleaning agents such as bleach, ammonia or acids.
- Also avoid prolonged exposure to heat, direct sunlight or extreme temperature fluctuations. It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a fabric-lined box or wrapped in a cloth separately from the others to prevent damage and possible scratches. It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
