History
- The name 'Peridot' is derived from the French word 'peritôt', meaning 'obscure', because of the many inclusions and internal fractures that are often found in it. Before this name, the old German word 'Chrysolite' was used for Peridot. It is also sometimes called Olivine and has only been found in green. The shade and depth of the green colour of Peridot depends on the proportion of Iron. If the green colour of Peridot is deeper, it means that there is a lower amount of Iron in it.
