History

- Prehnite is a translucent to transparent hydrated Calcium and Aluminium Silicate. It was first discovered in 1788 in Karoo dolerites in Cradock (South Africa). It was later named after Colonel Hendrik von Prehn (1733-1785), a Dutch mineralogist and early Governor of the Good Hope Colony, who first discovered it. Until recently, Prehnit was a rare collector's stone. New deposits have made it much more popular and affordable. In China, Prehnite is also called "Grape Jade" because of its typical formations, which often resemble grapes.
- Its colour is usually a soft apple-green. It can also be yellow-green, yellow-brown, grey, white, translucent, yellow, orange or blue. The rarer orange Prehnite was discovered in South Africa. Prehnite is found in veins and cavities in volcanic rocks. It is a typical product of low-grade metamorphism. Prehnite crystals can give off water when heated. Polished Prehnite has a glassy pearly lustre. It can be confused with Apatite, Jade or Serpentine.

Care
- Prehnite is quite hard, but softer than other stones. It can be cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Do not use harsh chemicals when cleaning. Extreme heat can cause permanent damage to Prehnite. It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a cloth-covered box or wrap them in cloth separately from the others to prevent self-damage and possible scratches.
- It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
