Sunstone

History

  • Sunstone is usually orange to reddish in colour. Its brilliant appearance is reminiscent of the sun. This is why it was named 'Sun Stone'. The metallic glittering effect is caused by tiny particles of Hematite, Goethite or Pyrite. It is a member of the feldspar mineral group. It is known for its aventuriscence, which is often referred to as 'schiller'. Not all Sun Stones show schiller. The intensity of the optical phenomenon depends on the size of the inclusions, which are typically composed of Hematite or Goethite. Smaller inclusions show more lustre, while larger inclusions appear as shiny metallic reflections. There are several different types of Sunstone available today. Sunstone can be a type of plagioclase feldspar (Oligoclase) or Potassium Feldspar (Orthoclase Sunstone). Oligoclase Sunstone is more common.

Care

  • Sunstone is not very durable or hard compared to most other types of stone. It can also have a grainy, broken fracture, which means it requires quite a bit. To clean it, simply use soapy water and a soft cloth. Be sure to rinse the stone well to remove any soapy residue. As with most gemstones, ultrasonic cleaners and steamers are not recommended. It is best to store stone jewellery and the stones themselves in a cloth-covered box or wrap them in cloth separately from other stones to prevent self-damage and possible scratches.
  • It is advisable not to wear jewellery during major physical activities such as exercise or sports. Avoid spraying perfume and hairspray directly on your jewellery and stones.
